Ayurveda does not recommend drinking plenty of water during the meal. Excessive drinking reduces Agni (digestive fire in Ayurveda) and increases the possibility of AMA (toxins) in your body as a result of poorly digested food.
Charaka samhita (ancient treatise on Ayurveda) advises drinking water SIPs after every 4-5 tablespoons of food. However, the number of drinks of water depends on what you eat.
Ayurvedic tips regarding food and water:
If the food consists mainly of liquid food, such as soup, then the extra liquid is not required.
If the food is dry, like crackers, a small amount of water helps moisturize the digestive system.
Searing foods, such as Chili, increases the Agni, and therefore a little drink of water will help to restore the balance.
Food fried in deep fat, requires very strong Agni for proper cleavage, so you need to avoid large quantities of water, especially if the food is cold. If you need to drink water with severe food, preference is given to slightly warm water in a very moderate amounts.
